Swedish lapfunds make wonderful family companions and thrive on being involved in all the activities of their human packs. This lively and intelligent medium-sized Spitz is a versatile, playful and energetic dog. Although generally regarded as a medium to high energy breed, it is capable of resting and cooling when appropriate, aka the lappy “on / off” switch. Vigilant and sociable, they can also be independent-minded and stubborn. The breed retains its guarding and herd traits of barking vigilance and attention. The Swedish lapfund is the oldest of the native Swedish breeds and is believed to be one of the oldest breeds in existence today. It was an important companion to the Sami people of Lapland (northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and northwest Russia), who initially worked as a hunting and guarding dog and later as a shepherd companion with reindeer pets. Lappi has a medium length, double coat that should be kept in good condition with weekly brushing and occasional bathing. Swedish lappies have to undergo heavy shedding of their undercoat at least once or twice a year, known as the “blowing coat”. A Groomer can be helpful in dealing with the large amount of fur that is shed at this time. Under no circumstances should the Swedish lapfund ever be shaved. The coat should always be maintained at its natural length throughout the year.
The Swedish lapfund has a keen and inquisitive nature, resulting in a high level of training ability. With the challenge of an independent mind and the occasional stubborn streak, training a Lappie requires light hands, patience, and a sense of humor. He is suitable for shepherding, agility, obedience and other dog sports.
Swedish lapfunds are a medium-high-energy breed and benefit from daily exercise. They have an “on / off” switch; Namely, they are very energetic, alert and active, but able to settle down and relax. It is an intelligent and active breed that needs regular mental and physical exercise to prevent boredom. It is not a breed to be left alone for long periods, and when a fenced yard outside is necessary. As with most breeds, a bored Lappie will find his way into mischief.
Swedish Lapfund should perform well on high quality dog food, whether it is commercially manufactured or prepared at home with the supervision and approval of your vet. Any diet should be appropriate for the age of the dog (puppy, adult, or senior). Some dogs are at risk of being overweight, so watch your dog’s calorie consumption and weight levels. Treatment training can be an important aid, but giving too much can lead to obesity. Know which human foods are safe for dogs and which are not. Swedish lapfunds are generally a healthy breed. Responsible breeders will test for hip dysplasia and PRA and health information on their dogs will be readily available.
