Introduction

The Italians have a word for it: “Carino.” In English, we say “cute”. In any language, this breed is completely beloved. Lagotto Romagnolo (plural: Lagoti Romagnoli) is known for the woolly curls that cover the head of the body to the tail, the crown of a gorgeous beard, eyebrows and mustache. Lagoti is under 20 and weighs no more than 35 pounds. But don’t be fooled by their teddy-bear looks – they are workers of real strength and endurance. The breed’s trademark curls feel and behave more human hair than fur.

History

Lagoti at least goes back to Renaissance Italy, where they were tied up as working waterfowlers on the marshy lands of Ravenna. (“Lago” stands for Italian “lake”.) For many years, though, Lagoati, blessed with an extraordinary nose, has been used in the Italian country to snuff out truffles, a tasty and expensive delicacy. Although many breeds can be trained on truffles, the Lagato is generally considered the best truffle dog in the world.

General Appearance

Small to medium-sized dogs, well proportioned, powerfully built, with a rustic appearance, with a curly coat of dense, woolly texture. The dog should be given the impression that he has the strength and endurance to work all day in difficult and challenging terrain.

Breeding

The gestation period in lasts for 60-64 days The primary period of the reproductive cycle of the female is called Proestrus and goes on for around 9 days. During this time the females begin to draw in males. The subsequent part is the Estrus when the bitch is receptive to the male. It goes on for around 3 to 11 days. The third part is the Diestrus. Usually, it happens around day 14. In this period the bitch’s discharge changes for distinctive red and reaching its end. The vulva gets back to average, and she will no longer allow mating. The fourth part called the Anestrus. The time span between heat periods ordinarily keeps going around a half year. The litter size ranges between 6 to 8 puppies at a time’

Grooming

The thick-looking, waterproof coat of the lagotope has thick, tight curls that cover the entire body except the head. They have a double coat of hair instead of fur and shed only minimally, although they may leave short strands of hair once in a while. The coat needs to be trimmed regularly. Some lugotto coats are more mature than others, and it is important to prepare regularly to prevent this. Ears should be examined weekly for wax or debris buildup, or any signs of infection.

Training

Lagotos are alert, intelligent and lively. They like to learn and please their owners and excel in other means such as canine events such as agility and obedience as well as dock diving (they naturally love water). With their excellent nose, they are the perfect candidates for aromatic work, search-and-rescue and detection of medical conditions. Early socialization and training are important and help ensure that Lagot grows into a well-adjusted, well-run partner.

Nutrition

As with most sports breeds, an active, busy lifestyle is required to keep the lagoto happy. They are not hyper and do not require an excessive amount of exercise, but they require both mental stimulation and physical activity. While a lotto will enjoy and benefit from outside time, the breed will not do well if left outside without contact with the family.
