Delhi dog crematorium site converted into a crematorium for dead bodies of covid patients dying in second wave

The number of Covid-19 casualties is approaching almost 700 each day and so is the body count and funeral protocols. With rising numbers every single day and little to no remaining infrastructure, civic bodies are being forced to resort to alternative methods to create funeral space for infected Covid-19 patients.

The authorities have been adding new pyre platforms all across the city crematoria and push them to their maximum capacity. In the wake of rising numbers of Covid-19 patients across the city, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation is planning to create a number of temporary human funeral pyre platforms in a project site that was meant to be the first dog crematorium in the city in Dwarka, Sector 29.

Corporation officials have said that these additional pyre platforms are being constructed to cater to the extra bodies. There has been an increase of 15% to 20% in daily cremations in New Delhi. The SDMC standing committee had previously approved the establishment of a crematorium meant for animals on PPP mode and about 6 months ago, the civic bodies approved the cremation rates at this particular dog crematorium. The 3.5 acres land of cremation site has not been in operation yet and shall be converted into a crematorium for human funerals.
